The government, in its almighty wisdom, decides to test his blood by infecting twelve death row inmates, the worst of the worst, with his blood. He is patient Zero, the only one on the expedition who did not die and seems to possess remarkable new powers. In The Passage, a new virus is discovered in Bolivia and an infected scientist brings it back to the United States. If that doesn’t jolt your memory enough, refer to Wikipedia’s list of characters in The Passage rather than attempting a reread of the enormous first book. But the beginning contains a short religious-type text which recaps The Passage and its heroes. There are a lot of characters in this series and you might not remember who is who when starting The Twelve. I read The Passage well over a year ago, before I began this blog, and so there is no review for the first book. The Twelve is Cronin’s sequel to his epic vampire novel The Passage.
